Nourishing Children. Strengthening Communities.
For nearly five decades, a Canada-wide movement—led by the grocery industry—working together to ensure children have access to nutritious food at school.
Together We Can Make the Biggest Impact
Vision: No child should go to school hungry in Canada.
Mission: Get Food to hungry children.
How We Bring Our Mission to Life
At The Grocery Foundation, impact begins with partnership. With the support of grocery, food, beverage, and consumer product companies, restaurants, corporate partners, and Canadians from coast-to-coast, we help support children who arrive at school hungry.
We bring our mission to life through industry-led, scalable initiatives that turn shared values into action. Our programs are designed to create a measurable impact for millions of Canadian children and youth, while offering meaningful ways for partners to engage their customers, teams, and communities.
Signature initiatives — Make Happy Tummies™, the Night to Nurture Gala, and our Voucher Program — harness the collective reach, resources, and influence of our industry to deliver impact at scale.
We also elevate our partners' leadership by bringing their commitment to life through in-store activations, integrated marketing, and select public awareness campaigns.
When a Hungry Child Is Nourished, Good Things Happen
Impact of Breakfast Programs on School
Regular breakfast consumption is related to mental and cognitive abilities, including:
- • better attention and more initiative
- • better social skill-building abilities
- • behaviour in classrooms
- • improving school grades or test scores
- • overall student achievement and academic performance. (Source)
Impact of Breakfast Programs on Mental Health
For children, living in a food-insecure household is associated with childhood mental health problems like hyperactivity and inattention. Experiences of hunger during childhood have a serious and lasting impact on mental health, manifesting in greater risks of depression and suicidal ideation in adolescence and early adulthood.
