Getting Food to Hungry Kids in Your Community TORONTO, ON – January 26, 2010 As many as one in five children go hungry every day in the neediest communities across Canada, yet their suffering is invisible. Child hunger may be hard to see but it is easy for us to take action. Today The Grocery Foundation is launching its annual campaign, “Toonies for Tummies” to raise money to feed hungry children. From January 26 to February 14, 2010 the Grocery Foundation and more than 1000 participating Ontario grocery stores will ask you to donate a Toonie at the checkout. One hundred percent of all money raised by this campaign goes back into your community to provide breakfast and nutritious snacks for students at a local elementary school. That means 75,000 Ontario children will no longer face a day filled with hunger or a future devoid of hope. Your generosity also benefits your pocketbook. When you add a Toonie to your grocery bill, the cashier will give you a $25 coupon book to thank you for your donation. “Toonies for Tummies” is a great way for you to help hungry children in your community and help the members of your own household too. The Grocery Foundation was established over 30 years ago by a handful of Ontario grocery leaders who recognized the plight of needy children. Since its inception, the members of the Grocery Foundation have donated more than $75 million to help children in need. Participating retailers in the “Toonies for Tummies” campaign include Sobeys, IGA, Foodland, Foodtown, Price Chopper, Metro, Food Basics, Longos, Highland Farms, Galati Market Fresh, Michael Angelo’s, Rabba Fine Foods and more than 200 Independent stores across Ontario.
